“Forgot all your worries on how to remove Holi colours. This time let’s enjoy Holi and be drenched in the happy colours of Holi with friends and family”.

Holi is the festival of colours, and we enjoy this festival with our family and friends in full swing. People use water guns to splash water and colour on Holi. Our children fill the balloons with colourful water and do balloon pelting on each other to have a festive spirit. Once the Holi fun is over, the next big thing in our mind is to remove hard Holi colours from skin and hair. If we repeatedly wash hair with shampoo and scrub skin with soap, this can damage skin and hair.

Removing Holi colour from the hair and skin needs to be done carefully because:

  • Skin Sensitivity: Holi colours can contain harsh chemicals or artificial dyes that may irritate or sensitise the skin. Rough scrubbing or aggressive cleaning methods can exacerbate skin irritation or cause allergic reactions.
  • Hair Damage: Holi colours can stick to the hair strands and scalp, making them difficult to remove. Vigorous scrubbing or harsh shampoos can damage the hair cuticles, leading to dryness, breakage, or hair fall.
  • Eye and Ear Protection: Colours can inadvertently enter sensitive areas such as the eyes or ears during removal. Gentle cleaning methods help prevent irritation or injury to these delicate areas.
  • Overall Skin Health: Aggressive scrubbing or harsh chemicals used for colour removal can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier function and lead to dryness, inflammation, or damage to the skin’s protective layer.

In summary, gentle and cautious removal of Holi colours from the hair and skin is essential to avoid skin irritation, hair damage, staining, and to maintain overall skin and hair health.

So, let’s learn how we can remove these colours from our loved ones’ skin and hair.

Shower with cold water

Taking a shower of cold water is the foremost step to remove the Holi colour. This will help to remove the initial colour from skin and hair. Avoid using hot water showers because this will make the colour strain harder.

Apply Mustard oil/Olive oil

We should massage our kid’s body and hair with oil before going to play holi. (Refer our holi safety tips article for more tips before playing holi). Oil helps in preventing skin and hair damage, but let’s not worry, if you have not applied the oil before.  First wash hair with mild shampoo, which will wash almost 30-40% of hair color, then apply mustard oil/olive oil and leave it for at least an hour, and then again wash with mild shampoo to remove the remaining color. Repeat the same process for skin.
